GWH Dental is closely monitoring the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The health, safety, and well-being of our staff, patients and community is our top priority. We all need to work together to keep everybody healthy, and to minimise the burden on the health system in the upcoming months.

Firstly, we are still open but with restrictions which I will explain later. You can be reassured that we have implemented additional infection control measures on top of normal strict infection control procedures to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

As you may already know, an infected person can shed the virus for up to 32 days, including BEFORE symptoms have begun and AFTER symptoms have resolved. This includes the respiratory tract but mainly via the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, the risk of spread of COVID-19 through aerosols created during dental procedures is significant.

As a result, the ADA has developed a 5 Level restriction system to scale back dental services to reduce oral transmission risks for COVID-19. We are currently at level 3 restrictions. Key points regarding level 3 restrictions are:
• Cease non-urgent care for patients who are 70 or older, pregnant, medically or immunocompromised
• Cease all aerosol-generating procedures for all patients receiving non-urgent care.

This means we are only able to treat severe pain and have to defer all routine recall examinations and dental treatments for those who present with the following concerns:
– Extractions of asymptomatic teeth without swelling
– Broken or chipped tooth/teeth
– Bleeding or sore gums, halitosis
– Loose teeth without aspiration risk
– Denture concerns
– Crown and bridge
– Scale and clean
– Clicking/grating in jaw joint

While dental health is important, I want to reassure you that if you are not in pain and you do not have an infection, or dental concern with serious medical implications, then it is safe for you to be seen in several months when the pandemic has been controlled. We will be able to treat the above concerns when the restrictions go back to Level 1.

Anyone who is:
1. a returned traveller in self-isolation
2. a contact of confirmed COVID-19 case practicing social distancing
3. close contact of confirmed COVID-19 case in self quarantine
4. symptomatic person awaiting results or
5. confirmed COVID-19 case
will be unable to be treated at GWH Dental as we do not have the appropriate personal protective equipment available. These people should call the Queensland Communicable Disease Branch on 3328 9724 or 13HEALTH (13 45 25 84) to organise treatment at an approved facility.

We will be able to treat you at GWH Dental once you have completed self-isolation or recovered from COVID-19 Infection.

In response to the level 3 restrictions, the surgery opening hours have been reduced and can be seen on the contact us page.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to us by phone or email.

These are unprecedented times and any steps that can reduce the rate of spread within the community will be beneficial for all.

Stay safe and support each other

Michael Harris
