Oral health can sometimes be overlooked, but it makes up a large part of your general wellbeing and has been linked to other diseases outside the mouth.

It is an essential part of our everyday lives and generally enhances your power to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow and express emotions through facial expressions.

Research by the Australian Dental Association (ADA) reveals an “alarming 57% of Australians expect at some stage in their lives to develop tooth decay, a condition that can be unsightly, painful and irreversible.”

At GWH Dental, our aim is to establish a relationship with our patients to help them maintain healthy teeth and gums for life.

Tooth decay: Also known as cavities, tooth decay is a common, but extremely preventable condition in Australia for people of any age. Your oral health and hygiene regime should start when you are child, but it’s not too late when you are an adult, to help build a solid foundation for your general wellbeing. Left untreated, tooth decay can lead to severe pain in both adults and children.

Periodontal (gum) disease: The disease is the result of an inflammatory process caused by bacteria. As the disease progresses, the bone that supports the teeth can be destroyed leading to unsightly, loose teeth, which may eventually be lost. Research suggests there is an association between gum disease and general ill health. It may be linked to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and premature, low-weight births. Further research is being conducted.

The good news is that most oral diseases are preventable and Michael and his dental health team can explain how.

As part of a thorough oral hygiene routine, our dentists in Cleveland, Brisbane, believe it is important to visit your dentist every six months for a check-up and make sure there are no early stages of tooth decay or gum disease.

Brushing and flossing twice a day will help significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease. Avoiding food and drinks that are high in sugar and carbohydrates will help to reduce the incidence of decay, while not smoking can reduce the risk of periodontal disease.

FAQS About Preventive Dentistry
Preventive dentistry is a branch of dentistry focused on maintaining oral health and preventing dental problems before they occur. It emphasises regular dental check-ups, cleanings, and adopting good oral hygiene practices.
Preventive dentistry is essential because it helps avoid the development of dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and enamel wear. By identifying potential problems early, it can save you from more extensive and costly treatments later on.
The primary components of preventive dentistry include regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, dental X-rays, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, and patient education on proper oral hygiene techniques.
The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends visiting the dentist for a check-up and cleaning at least twice a year. However, your dentist may suggest more frequent visits based on your individual oral health needs.
During a preventive dental check-up, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental and soft tissue issues. X-rays may be taken to detect problems not visible to the naked eye.
Yes, dental X-rays are considered safe, as the amount of radiation exposure is minimal. Did you know that the radiation you are exposed to from eating a banana is equivalent to 1 dental x-ray?
Practising preventive dentistry at home involves brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, limiting sugary and acidic foods and drinks, and using mouthwash.
Dental sealants are effective for both children and adults. They are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities and decay, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
Yes, preventive dentistry can help address bad breath by identifying and treating underlying dental issues like gum disease, cavities, and oral infections.
Yes, preventive dentistry aims to catch dental problems early or prevent them altogether, reducing the likelihood of more extensive restorative treatments such as fillings, root canals, or tooth extractions.
